International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT)

IIPT was founded in 1986, the UN International Year of Peace. It was born with a vision of making travel and tourism the “World’s first Global Peace Industry” – an industry that promotes and supports the belief that “Every traveler is potentially an Ambassador for Peace” – and as the world’s largest industry - an industry that contributes to broader societal objectives.

IIPT’s First Global Conference: Tourism – A Vital Force for Peace, Vancouver 1988 was a “watershed” event for the travel and tourism industry. The conference introduced for the first time the concept of Sustainable Tourism Development - four years prior to the Rio Summit. It also introduced a new paradigm of a “Higher Purpose of Tourism” that gives emphasis to the key role of travel and tourism in:

- Promoting international understanding among peoples of the world

- Collaboration among nations

- Protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity

- Enhancing cultures and valuing heritage

- Sustainable development

- Poverty reduction, and

- Reconciliation and healing wounds of conflict through tourism, culture and sport

This ‘Higher Purpose’ of tourism with its capacity to generate social, cultural, economic, environmental and political benefits, is now broadly recognized and has gained acceptance at the highest levels.
